Sleeping Yukata — Ryokan-Style Sleepwear for Home

If you have stayed at a Japanese ryokan, you know the feeling: after the bath, you change into a cotton yukata, tie it loosely, and the evening slows down. Many travelers look for that same sleeping yukata after they get home, and find it is hard to buy.

Nanafu's yukata starts from that shape — the yukata worn at Japan's hot spring inns — and remakes it for everyday life. We choose natural fabrics that can be washed at home, and the wrap closes in about 30 seconds. Wear it to sleep, to lounge, or tie it with an obi and step outside. Every piece is made in Japan.

Can you sleep in a yukata?

Yes. At a Japanese ryokan, the yukata in your room is what you wear after the bath, around the inn, and to bed. It is a simple robe of light fabric, wrapped left over right and held with a soft sash. That is why many people call it a sleeping kimono or yukata pajamas.

A ryokan yukata is made to be handed out and laundered by the hundred. Nanafu's yukata keeps the same easy shape, but is designed to be your own: a cut that sits well on the body, colors with depth, and fabrics chosen to feel good night after night.

What makes a good sleeping yukata

  • Natural fabric. Something that breathes and feels soft against the skin.
  • Easy care. You will wear it often, so it should wash at home.
  • A shape that does not get in the way. No buttons or elastic at the waist. You wrap it, tie it, and you are done.
  • Something you are happy to be seen in. A sleeping yukata is also what you wear when you open the door or have coffee in the morning.

How to wear it in 30 seconds

  1. Put it on like a robe.
  2. Wrap the right side against your body, then the left side over it. Left over right, always.
  3. Tie the sash at your waist. For sleeping, keep it loose. To go out, tie it with an obi.
